Thermowood Cladding

ThermoWood, ThermoChar & AtelierClad - Cladding

What is ThermoWood?

ThermoWood - a thermally modifed timber which undergoes a high temperature and steam kilning process which acts to remove resins, sugars.

It results in a timber that is dynamically more stable, remains easy to work, is easier to maintain due to the absence of sugars and resins and thus less prone to insect attack.

What is ThermoChar?

ThermoChar - is a thermally modified timber as ThermoWood above but is then subjected to a separate process after kilning where the surface  undergoes a carefully controlled application of heat which carbonises the surface to create a range of stunning surface textures.

What is Atelierclad?

AtelierClad sees the application of a special surface treatment which brings out the best features of softwood cladding in a collection of stylish colours, is UV stable, remains flexible so protects the finish and the timber as it will not readily flake of peel improving the longevity and visual aesthetics of your project for years to come.

You will find details of each of the finishes available for each category of cladding on this page - all giving you greater design choice.

WORKING WITH YOU

ThermoWood - timber is a good insulator and clad areas will help improve overall U Values for your home or project.

03

Durability

ThermoWood is also not prone to rot and is highly resistant to fungal and insect attack.

04

Life-Span

ThermoWood offers exceptional performance over normal timber cladding with a lifespan in excess of 25 years.

ThermoWood - Cladding Solutions Like No Other

The ThermoWood process takes timber, always from managed sources with full FSC and PEFC chain of custody, and runs it through a 3 stage process:

  1. High temperature kiln - drying to around 100 degrees, rising steadily to 130 degrees, reducing the moisture content to zero.
  2. Intensive heat - the temperature is oncreased to between 190 and 212 degrees, on reaching its target it is held at the required temperature for 2-3 hours.
  3. Cooling and moisture conditioning - the temperature is lowered using water spray systems, at 80-90 degrees re-moisturising and conditioning takes place through tothe timber core where the moisture content is estabilished at a level of 4-7%.

The timber is then sorted to become cladding or decking profiles, trims, etc.

The process allows certain types of timber to survive outdoor use for periods greater than 25 years - easily outperforming pressure treated timber.

Why should I consider AtelierClad colour coated Cladding?

Enhanced choice is one reason, we are all familiar with timber clad homes and barns featuring softwood cladding - most painted black to hide the silvering and black knots, this due to the lower quality of softwood used.

But technology has of course moved on and today we have access to flexible UV coatings and sealants such as QFlex in a satin finish , delivering a superior and long lasting finish, protecting your cladding and giving you access to a range of stylish colours.

The Atelier collection can be machined in a wide range of profile shapes and widths which can provide a seamless transition between cladding and decking.

Is the Atelier Brushed-Grain Cladding UV resistant?

Our Atelier Brushed-Grain Cladding range has a two stage UV resistant coating system with a washable surface. In essence, the coating system is made to remain flexible to accommodate any subtle movement in the timber. This coating will also resist flaking, cracking and peeling, it is also Non-Flammable and has a low VOC, so it can be used internally and externally.

Is there any on-going maintenance with the Atelier Brushed-Grain Cladding?

Nowadays, advances in technology on timber and paint production have moved on. So, providing the timber cladding has a fairly low and stable moisture content and the correct paint is applied, then ongoing maintenance will be very low. The colouring of Atelier Brushed-Grain Cladding will be more about the aesthetics and design intent instead of protecting the timber from the weather.
